The technology
Fotona Erbium 2940 nm
Subablative — no superficial burns, no hair breakage
Introduction
An Erbium wavelength chosen specifically for hair restoration
The Fotona Laser is a dual-wavelength laser device. At Camara Lopes Clinic, we use the Erbium wavelength (2940 nm) specifically for hair treatment. This wavelength is also used in other platforms internationally (Solon, Lavieen, Etherea), but Fotona offers the unique advantage of subablative Erbium energy.
Subablative delivery means the laser does not cause superficial burns, does not break hair strands, and poses no risk of hair breakage. Despite this gentle approach, it is still capable of activating follicular metabolism — triggering measurable improvements in hair-cycle dynamics and scalp health.
Treatment is performed by Dra. Alessandra Bernardi, board-certified dermatologist and trichology specialist, as a standalone therapy or in combination with FUE hair transplant and PRP therapy.
The technology
Subablative Erbium energy that activates follicles without damaging them
The 2940 nm Erbium wavelength is highly absorbed by water in skin tissue, allowing precise interaction with the upper dermis at low energy levels. Subablative pulses deliver enough energy to stimulate cellular activity in the follicle without ablating the surface — meaning no visible damage, no burns, and no hair breakage during treatment.
The result is a scalp environment where weakened follicles receive metabolic stimulation, the surrounding tissue is reorganized, and microcirculation is enhanced — without the recovery downtime associated with more aggressive laser modalities.
Four follicular effects
What the Fotona Erbium laser does to your scalp
01
Prolonged anagen phase
Increases the duration of the active hair growth cycle, keeping follicles in the productive phase longer.
02
Multiple strands per follicle
Greater potential for follicular units to produce multiple hairs rather than a single thin strand.
03
Enhanced microcirculation
Improves blood supply to the scalp at the dermal level, supporting follicle nutrition and oxygenation.
04
Reorganized collagen fibers
Restructures collagen for improved follicle anchoring in the dermis — a more stable foundation for hair.
Session schedule
Monthly sessions for 3 to 6 months, then quarterly maintenance
Treatment is carried out in monthly sessions — generally between three and six consecutive sessions, depending on the case. After the initial course, maintenance sessions are scheduled every four months. A minimum of three sessions per year is recommended for ongoing hair health maintenance.

Drug delivery
Enhanced absorption
Post-laser, topical actives penetrate up to 4 mm into the dermis
After application of the 2940 nm Erbium laser, skin permeability increases significantly, allowing active substances to penetrate up to 4 millimeters into the skin — even without microneedling. This has been documented through sequential biopsies following drug delivery applications.
Following the laser, topical actives such as minoxidil, finasteride, growth factors, and biotin can be applied directly to reach the hair bulb and pharmacologically enhance the effects of the laser treatment. The combination delivers both biological stimulation and targeted pharmacological action in a single session.
Combined therapy
Adding microneedling: the bloody dew that triggers endogenous growth factors
Microneedling can be performed in the same session as the Fotona laser to stimulate what is called the “bloody dew” — a controlled microtrauma that releases the body’s own endogenous growth factors. This adds collagen stimulation, reinforces the follicle anchoring system, and contributes to metabolic activation of the scalp.
Both procedures combined are used to achieve enhanced results in the post-operative phase of hair transplantation, and in clinical treatments for different types of alopecia — including androgenetic alopecia, scarring alopecias, and alopecia areata. Dra. Alessandra evaluates whether the combination is appropriate for your case during the consultation.
