Your medical team
At Camara Lopes Clinic in Curitiba, Brazil, our FUE hair transplant is performed by Dr. Sergio Camara Lopes, a board-certified plastic surgeon with over 21 years of experience and more than 5,000 procedures completed. Every case is co-evaluated by Dra. Alessandra Bernardi Camara Lopes, a dermatologist specializing in hair trichology, ensuring your hair loss is diagnosed from both a surgical and dermatological perspective before any treatment begins.
Our approach combines FUE extraction with DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) for maximum graft survival and natural hairline design. We typically transplant 3,500 to 4,500 grafts per day, with results visible between 10 and 12 months after the procedure.
The Technique
What Is Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)?
Follicular Unit Extraction is considered the most advanced method of hair restoration available today. Individual follicular units are extracted one by one from the donor area using a specialized tool called a punch, often attached to a micromotor. These grafts are then prepared and implanted in the thinning or balding areas of the scalp.
Unlike the older FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) method, which requires removing a strip of scalp and leaves a linear scar, FUE allows for a more extensive and evenly distributed harvest without visible scarring. Patients can wear their hair short after healing without any telltale marks.
Follicular units naturally exist as single (1 hair), double (2 hairs), or multiple (3 or more hairs) grafts. At Camara Lopes Clinic, Dr. Sergio strategically places single-hair grafts along the hairline border for a natural appearance, while multi-hair grafts are used in the mid-scalp and crown areas to maximize density.

Donor zone
Donor Area
Donor Area and Follicular Availability
A successful FUE transplant depends largely on having a sufficient number of healthy follicular units in the donor area. The donor region is located on the sides and back of the scalp, where hair follicles are genetically resistant to the hormone DHT (dihydrotestosterone) that causes androgenetic alopecia.
Provided that hair loss is not due to a previously diagnosed illness, most patients are eligible for hair transplantation from one area of the scalp to another. Follicles are extracted using either a manual technique or a micromotor, without leaving visible scars.
When scalp donor supply is insufficient, body hair from the beard or chest may also be used in a procedure known as Body Hair Transplantation (BHT). This technique expands the total number of available grafts for patients with limited scalp donor density.
DHI Implantation
FUE Extraction Combined with DHI Implantation
At Camara Lopes Clinic, we combine FUE extraction with DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) for graft placement. This means grafts are placed immediately after extraction using special implanter pens, minimizing the time follicles spend outside the body and maximizing survival rates.
The incisions created during DHI heal within 24 hours and provide a stable base for the new hairs. Because bleeding is minimal, the risk of infection or vascular complications such as necrosis is significantly reduced.
The precise control offered by DHI implanter pens allows for higher density, as grafts can be placed very close together. This results in less damage to the surrounding scalp tissue, reduced post-operative scarring, and a more natural growth direction for each transplanted follicle.

Graft Capacity
How Many Grafts Can Be Transplanted Per Day?
At Camara Lopes Clinic, we typically transplant 3,500 to 4,500 grafts per day. For mega sessions exceeding 5,000 grafts, the procedure is split across two consecutive days to maintain graft quality and precision throughout.
Graft removal and implantation are performed in carefully structured mini-sessions throughout the day. The entire restoration process is personalized, and every step from extraction to implantation is done gradually to ensure each follicle is handled with care.
The number of grafts you need depends on your Norwood classification (for men) or Ludwig classification (for women), your hair type, donor area density, and aesthetic goals. Dr. Sergio and Dra. Alessandra evaluate these factors together during your online consultation to determine the optimal graft count for your case.
Eligibility
Who Is a Candidate for FUE Hair Transplant?
FUE hair transplant is suitable for most men and women experiencing hair loss from androgenetic alopecia (hereditary pattern hair loss). Ideal candidates meet the following criteria:
- Sufficient donor hair density on the sides and back of the scalp
- Hair loss that has stabilized or is being managed with medical treatment
- Realistic expectations about density, coverage, and growth timeline
- No active scalp infections, untreated dermatological conditions, or autoimmune hair loss
- Age 25 or older (younger patients may still be experiencing progressive loss)

FUE vs FUT
FUE vs FUT: Why We Use Follicular Unit Extraction
FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation), also known as the strip method, involves removing a strip of skin from the donor area and dissecting individual follicular units under a microscope. While FUT can yield a high number of grafts in a single session, it leaves a permanent linear scar across the back of the scalp.
At Camara Lopes Clinic, we exclusively perform FUE because it offers significant advantages over the strip method:
- No linear scar - patients can wear their hair short without visible marks
- Less post-operative pain and faster recovery time
- More even distribution of extraction across the donor area
- Lower risk of nerve damage and numbness in the donor region
- Body hair (beard, chest) can be used as supplemental donor grafts when needed
- Option for non-shave and long hair FUE variants for maximum discretion
The main trade-off is that FUE is more time-consuming than FUT, requiring greater precision from the surgeon. This is why choosing a surgeon with extensive FUE-specific experience is critical to the quality of your results.
Feature | FUE (Our Method) | FUT (Strip Method) |
Scarring | Tiny dot scars, invisible at short lengths | Permanent linear scar across donor area |
Recovery | 7-10 days, faster healing | 2-3 weeks, more discomfort |
Donor distribution | Even, across full safe zone | Concentrated in one strip area |
Body hair donor | Beard and chest can supplement | Not possible |
Non-shave option | Available | Not available |
Nerve damage risk | Minimal | Higher (strip incision) |
Recovery & Growth
Post-Procedure Recovery and Hair Growth Timeline
Within three weeks of surgery, it is normal for most transplanted hair to fall out. This is known as the shedding phase. The follicles enter a temporary resting period before beginning a new growth cycle. This shedding varies from patient to patient and should not be a cause for concern.
Hair regrowth begins after this resting phase and continues for around 12 months. Most patients see their final results between 10 and 12 months after the procedure. Here is the typical growth timeline:
Week 1-3
Initial healing
Scabs form and fall off. Mild redness in the recipient area.
01
Week 3-8
Shedding phase
Transplanted hairs fall out. This is normal and expected.
02
Month 3-4
Early regrowth begins
Fine, thin hairs start to emerge.
03
Month 6-8
Noticeable improvement
Hairs thicken and increase in density.
04
Month 10-12
Final result
Full density achieved. Hairs reach their mature thickness.
05
It is important to note that many patients experience emotional stress during the shedding stage. Some may wrongly interpret the shedding phase as a failed procedure. At Camara Lopes Clinic, we always remind our patients to remain patient and trust the process. The final outcome takes time and should not be judged prematurely.
In some cases, patients may also experience ‘shock loss,’ where native hair near the transplant area falls out due to temporary trauma to the scalp. This is usually reversible and not permanent.
What to Expect
Advantages and Considerations of FUE Hair Transplant
Advantages
- Minimally invasive procedure with no stitches required No visible linear scars - wear your hair any length
- Strategic selection of single and multiple-hair grafts for natural density
